Today, we’re venturing back into the bizarre world of NFTs, exploring the 5 most ridiculous purchases so far. After that, we’ll give you an overview of what looks to be a very busy week in the markets. Let’s go!

The craziest NFT buys…so far

The NFT game hasn’t been around long, but it’s already offered some quite staggering buy stories. Here’s our round-up of some of the weirdest.

#1 Bad Luck Brian

Poor Brian. This guy’s yearbook photo has been synonymous with misfortune since 2012. It’s become one of the internet community’s favourite memes, with the text on the image describing various unfortunate, unlucky, embarrassing circumstances.

In reality, the boy in the picture is not called Brian, he’s Kyle Raven. This guy pocketed a cool $36,000 for this simple yearbook photo.

Okay then — not so poor Brian.

#2 How Charmin’!

In a series of tweets, toilet paper maker Charmin randomly introduced a number of illustrations of rolls of toilet paper, accompanied by witty wording. It then sold these as an NFT.

One of the drawings sold for $2,120. It’s not the craziest sum on this list, but when you consider that it’s a digital picture of a toilet roll, well…

#3 What a gas!

When Covid lockdowns hit, many of us were a little lost as to what to do with ourselves. Not Brooklyn-based filmmaker Alex Ramírez-Mallis, though.

To quell the boredom of home, he and four of his friends started sending audio recordings of their farts to one another through a WhatsApp group chat. As you do.

Just a year later, a 52-minute audio file of flatulence was put on sale as an NFT. Someone actually bought it and was even willing to pay 0.24 ETH for it — around $420.

No words!

#4 Nyan Cat-astrophe

Remember Nyan Cat? It was a YouTube sensation when it was uploaded 10 years ago. It now has over 185 million views on the online video platform, making it one of the most iconic videos of all time.

Quite unbelievably, the NFT of this pixelated feline fetched 300 ETH at auction, worth around $531,000. Meee-ow!

#5 What a way to Tweet yourself

5 very simple words started off the craze that became one of the world’s most popular social networks. But just how expensive are those words? It turns out VERY.

Jack Dorsey sold the NFT of his first tweet for a whopping $2.9 million. That’s $145,000 per letter!

In a nice twist, Dorsey has said the proceeds will be turned into Bitcoin and donated to GiveDirectly, a charity that helps six African countries with COVID-19 relief.

Are you a collector?
